I LOVED Sapa so much that I took a tour there, but when my tour group returned to Hanoi I stayed behind. How long did you spend in Vietnam? Sorry, so many questions!

<br

As you may have read on my blog, I'm really perturbed by pollution in general, wherever I am in the world, and was actually surprised at trash pollution at HaLong. It is such an incredibly beautiful place as you know, but after traveling all around Vietnam I was a little surprised at the trash at Halong. I had a really interesting conversation with a local there who did work for UNESCO. It was HE who claims it is largely the result of local tour operators (Vietnamese) who work/own the many tourist boats there or cater to the tourists who are or have been known to dump trash overboard. As opposed to tourists per se. Who knows, and it is not fair to blame anyone who isn't caught in the act, but I found that sad and interesting, that perhaps many locals were not concerned about keeping this area pristine, esp. given it is the source of income. Is it cultural after all? Or just greed? I really enjoyed my boat trip though. I did the over night stay and being alone (as usual ;) I had an entire cabin to myself. I didn't go to Catba Island though - I heard it is not so good. Did you?

<br
