Ha Long Bay (literally meaning 'Descending Dragon Bay' owing to its thousands of limestone karsts) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular travel destination, located in Northern Vietnam, not too far from Hanoi.
Kathryn and Daniel will post a ‘Snap de la semaine’ irregulary, but at a rate of one per week. It is an original photo not otherwise on the site—it might be fresh from our camera, a new scan of some old film, a product of our fooling around with Photoshop, or a file from the archive that we haven’t posted yet.

For nearly ten years now, Daniel of Two Go Round-The-World has explored how travel captures our imagination and engages our deepest emotions. One half of the duo that maintains the widely read Two Go Round-The-World blog, Daniel treats his subjects not only as works of art but also as symbols of the cultural and political forces that inspire them. His latest book, The Physics of Flocking, gathers his favourite writing featured over the past two years on Two Go Round-The-World in columns like 'Looking Back' and 'The Whole Picture'—along with new reflections.
I loved Halong Bay. As you may have read on my blog, I’m really perturbed by pollution in general, wherever I am in the world, and was actually surprised at trash pollution at HaLong. It is such an incredibly beautiful place as you know, but after traveling all around Vietnam I was a little surprised at the trash at Halong. I had a really interesting conversation with a local there who did work for UNESCO. It was HE who claims it is largely the result of local tour operators (Vietnamese) who work/own the many tourist boats there or cater to the tourists who are or have been known to dump trash overboard. As opposed to tourists per se. Who knows, and it is not fair to blame anyone who isn’t caught in the act, but I found that sad and interesting, that perhaps many locals were not concerned about keeping this area pristine, esp. given it is the source of income. Is it cultural after all? Or just greed? I really enjoyed my boat trip though. I did the over night stay and being alone (as usual I had an entire cabin to myself. I didn’t go to Catba Island though – I heard it is not so good. Did you?
Did you guys go to Sapa? I LOVED Sapa so much that I took a tour there, but when my tour group returned to Hanoi I stayed behind. How long did you spend in Vietnam? Sorry, so many questions!
