We are constantly exposed to fear-mongering—deliberate exaggeration of risks and appeal to emotion rather than reason. Sometimes with profit motive—pharmaceutical companies and restless leg syndrome, home security outfits. Sometimes from politicians, competing to be seen as &quot;tough on crime&quot;.
