A new SPG credit card is on the horizon!

Update (December 17, 2009) — The Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) program and American Express have just announced a new credit card for Canadian residents: the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express. The new card will launch in the first few months of 2010 and will provide new benefits, including an accelerated points-earning feature. Check out our post here.

As we reported in September, SPG will no longer offer the SPG MasterCard from MBNA in Canada. At that time we wrote that SPG would continue its relationship in Canada, but were unsure as to who the credit card issuer would be.

We have since learned that a new SPG credit card is on the horizon. Recent speculation on RedFlagDeals has it that the new SPG card will be from American Express and carry a higher annual fee than the US$45 fee our American friends pay.  That’s just conjecture, however. We’ve also heard rumblings that the card was going to be TD’s first MasterCard offering. Again, just speculation.

According to Starwood, the new card is expected in Canada within the first few months of 2010. Details have not yet been announced. You can be or enter your email address here to be among the first to receive details. According to SPG’s site, “you can expect all the rich benefits you’ve come to appreciate—and a few new ones.”

Note that, when the new SPG credit card is released in Canada, current MBNA cardholders will not automatically receive it. You will need to reapply to receive the new card.

About the Author: Everywhere he goes, Daniel is quietly reminded of the adage attributed to St Augustine: "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page". And so it was with St Augustine’s maxim echoing in his mind that he decided along with his wife, Kathryn, that they would embark on a round-the-world trip in July 2011.
