Filling in the Gap: Travel Intern Winners Announced!

The results are in! Gap Adventures has chosen its 'Coolest Travel Interns'.
The folks at Gap Adventures had been looking for the ‘Coolest Travel Intern’ and found not one—but two! And the winners are—Mr Taylor Hess and Ms Kerri Minns! Check out the official announcement from Gap Adventures CEO Bruce Poon Tip here.
Kathryn and I first learned of Gap Adventure’s search for the ‘Coolest Travel Intern’ in September and wrote about it here. We’ve been following the search ever since!
For these entrants, the measure of their quality as an intern—and as an employee—will be the ‘gap’ between what they’ve said and what they’ll do! Nonetheless, their video entries were pretty persuasive—check them out here. Kathryn and I have a feeling that these two will back up their claims!
Gap’s newest interns will be working their way through all of the departments at Gap’s ‘basecamp’. According to Gap Adventures CEO Bruce Poon Tip “it was important to find people with the right attitude to jump around and take on all of the challenges.”
Their video entries were supplemented with “very compelling” written essays on their skills and abilities. However, in choosing these interns, the HR screenings were decisive. One of the questions asked of all the interns was: “Who in history would you like to have dinner with?”. The most creative answers were given preference, of course. Pro Tip: Oprah and Princess Di don’t stack up against Alexander the Great, Gengis Khan, Galileo, Shakespeare, et al.
Promotions such as these leverage social media, and in so doing receive a lot of publicity. Moreover, these campaigns are destined to receive press coverage—beyond local exposure. As the candidates are screened, the media engine picks up on the human element of the story, giving the campaign legs.
At the same time, Gap Adventures benefits from the enthusiasm of a large pool of creative talent. If the intern is a great fit, they’ve won over an employee and contributor that’s not afraid to challenge their own assumptions and look at things from a fresh angle. A campaign such as this asks its participants to break away from conventional thinking and come up with something fresh.
Gap Adventures CEO Bruce Poon Tip writes: “Thanks to everyone who helped get the word out and make this a very interesting social media exercise. This was even brought up during my visit to Google two weeks ago. Those assembled were very interested in hearing about my experience with this viral incident!”
Congratulations, Kerri and Taylor! Check out their video entries at Gap’s new travel blog, the “Oasis“. Leave ‘em a congrats in the comment stream over at Gaps’ blog.

About the Author: Everywhere he goes, Daniel is quietly reminded of the adage attributed to St Augustine: "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page". And so it was with St Augustine’s maxim echoing in his mind that he decided along with his wife, Kathryn, that they would embark on a round-the-world trip in July 2011.

A great chance for these two to meet new people and try new things. I wonder if this was a one-off or if Gap Adventures will turn this into an annual competition. It’s better than a job fair (and a little more entertaining).
