It should not determine your decision and your traveling dreams. If you're living on your own...move into a half way house or YMCA. Okay, if you're a guy this is very easy and your rent will be under $400 w/ all utilities included! Ladies... if you're brave and can survive the recently released men from prison, it isn't a bad option. Otherwise get a roommate and pretend you're still paying high rent. Also make sure any accounts you have are interest bearing. Sometimes some people simply will not understand your newfound frugalness and will not respect it. Identify these people and insist on doing dirt cheap or free things with them. If they keep insisting on getting you to part with huge chunks of money to have a good time...drop them. A true friend will understand. Shopping at the thrift store will help a lot and getting quick second jobs like dishwasher, telephone interviewer, usher, etc. Good luck!!!!

<br

I also manage to save better when I compare each expense to something else I could be doing with the money while abroad. I think it puts things into the reality that I would rather spend the money while traveling than while stationary.

<br

Another good one might be learning how to cook -- or at least knowing how to make some simple pasta dishes. Those can really cut your food budget way down because they are so cheap per box.

<br

I think it's good to put down micro and macro goals so you can check things off often as you go along. Even tiny goals are worth jotting down so you can see how much you've accomplished in between big goals.

<br

There are several great sites to help you cut down your grocery bill dramatically. And you don't really need to buy newspaper as most of coupons these day are online. And contrary to old believe that using coupon on grocery means you will eat junk food. So not true! There are a lot of healthy choices. Plus you will also learn to shop more with a list and stick to it.

<br

We're already car fee and it helps a lot on saving money, as well as having ourselves well trained to take public transportation.
Your post has inspired me to cut on unnecessary expenses even more.
Tomorrow we're having a garage sale :)

<br

I too have been saving for another extended trip, so yea, cutting costs has been essential for me. I went cold turkey from Tim Hortons, and haven't looked back. However, I make my own coffee now. Scored a 20 dollar coffee maker a while back and it's paid for itself a zillion fold, literally. Canada's also got that new tax free savings accounts, which I've been dropping some dough into when I have it. Kind of my emergency money I'm setting aside should my other savings get accidentally drunkenly spent some evening. Savings a pain in a yoohoo, but once you've got some wealth behind your name, it's so much easier to leave and be happy without having to worry. Look forward to your next installment on how to be a cheapwad :-)

<br

I could set up my account to do this automatically, but I like the buzzI get from doing it myself every other week!
Another huge way to save money (although certainly not possible or preferable for everyone) is to move back home. Not paying rent makes a MAJOR difference.

<br
