1x1.trans Snap de la semaine: Temple of the Reclining Buddha

Wat Pho (The Temple of the Reclining Buddha) is one of the largest and oldest wat in Bangkok and is home to more than one thousand Buddha images, as well as one of the largest single Buddha statues in Thailand: the Reclining Buddha (Phra Buddhasaiyas, Thai พระพุทธไสยาสน์).

Kathryn and Daniel will post a ‘Snap de la semaine’ irregulary, but at a rate of one per week. It is an original photo not otherwise on the site—it might be fresh from our camera, a new scan of some old film, a product of our fooling around with Photoshop, or a file from the archive that we haven’t posted yet.

Holy cow! That is an enormous statue. My mother became a Buddhist several years ago so I have a new appreciation for Buddhism and would love to go to Asia. I love seeing Eastern art and sculptures like this — so different from anything you would see in America.

I loved the Reclining Buddha! the rest of Wat Pho is actually equally picturesque; plenty of beautiful stone carvings and ornate mother-of-pearl statues. You could spend hours there, just watching – and all the while knowing the bustle of Bangkok is just outside the gates.

Wat Pho is one of my favourite places to visit in Bangkok, not just for the famous reclining Buddha, but also for the picturesque surrounding temples and lighthouses. It’s hard to believe that just outside of the walls of this peaceful sanctuary is the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, home to 64 million people. Another place not to be missed is the Bangkok Grand Palace. Both places offer plenty of intricate architectural subjects to be photographed.
